Following up my review of the best all-you-can-eat places in Toronto, I thought I’d show my thriftier side. Want a good meal at a cheap price? Here are my recommendations (but don’t believe Bill — none if it is actually ‘fast food’).

Five Doors North
2088 Yonge St, Toronto
Too many Torontonians who live south of Bloor St. (SOBs) rarely venture north of Bloor (NOB) for any reason whatsoever. They tend to take the myopic view that if it ain’t SOB, it ain’t worth doin’.
However, if they would just take a chance and buy a subway token and endure the whole 10 minutes it would take them to get to Eglinton Ave, they might discover a thing or two — ‘thing’ meaning cool restaurant.
One of these Eglinton-area establishments worth checking out is Five Doors North. Situated in a nondescript row of storefronts, identifiable only by the five multicoloured doors hanging over the tiny patio area, this hipster-chic bistro offers up some great food (and good music) and won’t put a huge dent in your wallet (although, I forgot to record the prices of everything — aren’t I a great restaurant critic?). Sei Sushi
214 King St. W, Toronto
Everything about this place was so mediocre and overpriced that it actually made me angry.
This is a perfect example, it seems, of a place that can stay in business strictly based on location; nestled into a restaurant complex on King St. directly opposite Roy Thomson Hall, it is perfectly situated to attract the crowds from the TSO, the Royal Alexandra Theatre and the Princess of Wales Theatre. And it looks impressive; the interior is best described as ‘Disney-fied,’ designed to make you feel you’re in the calm, Japanese wilderness setting — fake plants, a fake stream, a stone pathway that winds its way among the tables etc. So far, based on all this, you feel like you’re in an upscale sushi restaurant — by that I mean a varied and unique menu, only the choicest cuts of fish, and generous portions. Rosewater Supper Club
19 Toronto St.
Toronto
Dinner for Two - $120 (with wine)
I wasn’t sure what to expect upon arrival at the Rosewater. I am in no way an expert on food or dining – I think the fanciest place I’d ever eaten at before was Café Nervosa (which is nice, but not fancy). There was even concern that a blazer would be required. Turns out I had nothing to worry about; this is fine dining in a Banana Republic, as opposed to Canali, sort of way.
Upon entering the historic Toronto St. building, you immediately encounter a new ‘lounge’ area, replete with equal amounts polished marble, burnished steel, taught leather and glowing hardwood – but no hostess. After a couple of minutes had passed my companion and I were a little unsure if we were supposed to seat ourselves, but finally the hostess arrived to show us to our table. The service was very prompt after that, although it later became a bit of a comedy of errors, as you will see.
